Firstly I would like to thank all of the coaches, parents and helpers who made it possible for East Midlands to send out another strong team to the Junior Inter Regional Regatta. As a region we finished 10th overall with 111 points, 72 of which came from the girls. However that is not say there wasn’t success within the boys team.

The J15 2x of Jacques Gavey & Oliver Tunnard from Boston Rowing Club came away with a bronze medal. Also Max Parker from Nottingham Rowing (who rows with the GB Start squad at Holme Pierrpont) produced a bronze medal in J16 1x.

Medals for the girls came from another Boston double of Ruby Latka & Jasmine Latka in WJ14 2x with a silver medal winning performance. The WJ16 4x of Nottingham Rowing Club also produced a silver medal. The girls went into the final as the fastest quad with 4 seconds on Henley. But unfortunately Henley proved to be too strong in the final.

My personal highlight of the regatta had to be the performance of our composite WJ16 8. With athletes made up from Leicester, Devil’s Elbow, Newark and Nottingham, the girls only had one outing prior to the regatta and despite being the underdogs of the regatta they won their heat easily. Unfortunately due to an error with the times the heats had to be re-rowed in the afternoon with medals being awarded to the 3 fastest crews across the 2 heats. In the re-rowed heat the girls again shot out in front within the first 500m and won by 8 seconds. We all stood around the score board anxiously waiting for their time to pop up. 5:52 was the time to beat. The screen rolled over and the girls had completed the course in 5:56 only 4 seconds off a medal. A massive well done to all those involved with this crew. The girls should be very proud of themselves.
