Challenges Facing our Clubs, Survey

We all hope that you are well and that you are safe with your families.

These are times that none of us could have predicted and for which no-one has prepared. There are strategies being worked on to support the rowing community and that staff are trying hard to produce material that clubs and individuals can use to remain in touch with the sport.

The intention of this ‘survey’ is is to explore the climate on how your Club is operating in this time, any issues that there may be around income, expenditure and engagement. We would be grateful if you could share.
Anything you do share will be used anonymously to prompt discussion at the next Regional Chairs’ Forum and to see how we can help you as Clubs in the current situation and as and when clubs become active again. Unfortunately we have no date for a return to normal Club operations.

Thank you

Notes from Chairs’ Forum 26 March

Below is an overview of the considerations from the Chairs’ forum 26 March 2020.

  • Short Term Considerations:
  • Is your club fully secure and closed down.
  • Are you considering regular checks.
  • Have fridges and water heaters been emptied and turned off.
  • Do you need to place rat and mouse traps.
  • Are boat hatches open.
  • Are there piles of wet boat towels lying around.
  • Mid Term Considerations:
  • Have you conducted a financial review, can this support the BR questionnaire.
  • Contact your insurance broker to see if they will be willing to reduce the premium as the club is no longer rowing.
  • Contact CART or EA to reduce boat licence fees (a touchy subject but one worth considering).
  • Keep an eye out on the BR Club Affiliation process.
  • Review the ability to rent/ loan ergs to Club members.
  • Keep engaged with your squads, you will want them to return to rowing. Look at the upcoming BR media for erg and fitness videos.
  • Contact other Clubs to see what they are doing.
  • Consider media platforms to communicate with your squads – Zoom, google hangouts, MSTeams have all been praised.
  • Review your Governance and operational documents and policies. Plan a review cycle to ensure all key policies.
  • Safeguarding Policy just been updated and other policies will follow
  • Have you incorporated the BR Codes of Conduct into your Membership packs.
  • Long Term Considerations:
  • Mark Davies is promoting that his Ladders format might be a great way to come back to full rowing activities.
  • NCC will be reviewing the Competition Calendar in preparedness to reopen in a controlled way.
  • Review your Competitions and see what can be done to improve, amend or make it easier to restart (given what may come from the NCC).
  • Be aware that squads may not be ready to return to rowing (technically and physically). Plan a return to rowing training plan to ensure that they can. Consider health and fitness first.
  • contact your river authority to inform them of the water conditions, offer a hand if suitable, it might be a good club social gathering to start off.

NWSC Open for All this Winter

NWSC Winter use

Read below for a note from Jack at NWSC for use over winter.

Dear All.
With the river levels increasing on a yearly basis, it seems there is some struggle with gaining river access around the UK, with many crews confined to the clubhouses because of the swollen rivers.

The NWSC has only lost one weekend this autumn/winter period because of flooding, in theory and with our team constantly monitoring the course, that won’t happen again with our preventative measures. Also this was the first closure for many years due to uncontrollable river levels.

There are now no events taking exclusive use of the course from now until the March/April period and an ideal time to use the regatta lake for training. We can put up racks for storage and we have a trailer park on-site, as long as we are made aware in advance to allow – through the winter – crews to leave boats on the site to utilise the course more.

Throughout this period on Weekends and also Wednesdays (for students), we will allow all users access to the course at 50% off for a launch fee – so only £5.50 per day, rather than £11.

Kind Regards
Jack Garner
Contract Manager
National Water Sports Centre

If you are interested, please get in contact through the NWSC website.
Happy rowing.

Member Survey

BR Membership Survey 2019

Why is British Rowing conducting the survey?

British Rowing is currently conducting a survey of current and former members, and anyone with a connection to the wider sport, either now or in the past. This is part of a project to increase the number of British Rowing members so that more can be done to support our sport. Initial research with the rowing community has highlighted several approaches and ideas to achieve this. The purpose of the survey is to share these, and to hear your views on them.

Taking part in the survey

It would be great if you could complete this survey, and please also feel free to share it with your wider rowing contacts.

TAKE PART IN THE SURVEY

Please note that this is a different and additional survey to the recent British Rowing member satisfaction survey, which you may also have completed.

Thank you for your time.
